February 13, 2010

[10:09]  Geri Kuhn: Welcome to the February meeting of the SL Bar Association. A transcript will be made of this meeting and posted to the website.
[10:10]  Geri Kuhn: Cat, can you make a transcript?
[10:10]  Cat Galileo: yes
[10:10]  Geri Kuhn: We have a quroum
[10:10]  Geri Kuhn: so we can start
[10:10]  Geri Kuhn: This marks my first meeting as the president and I’m looking forward to an exciting year. I would like to acknowledge the hard work that my predecessors, Ben, Solomon and Legal have done.
[10:11]  Geri Kuhn: The Board would like to give gifts to Solomon and Legal as a small token of gratitude for their work. We will postpone the gift giving until they can both be at meeting to accept the gifts.
[10:11]  Lexis Looming: actually I count 9
[10:11]  Geri Kuhn: oh shoot
[10:11]  Geri Kuhn: Saved by Rose
[10:11]  Keeter Mactavish: someone just dropped in.
[10:11]  Rose Springvale: me?
[10:11]  Geri Kuhn: Yes
[10:11]  Rose Springvale: can't see you all
[10:11]  Lexis Looming: Welcome Rose!!!
[10:11]  Rose Springvale: how can i save you? lol
[10:11]  Geri Kuhn: \We didn't have a quroum
[10:12]  Rose Springvale: ohhh
[10:12]  Geri Kuhn: until you came
[10:12]  Lexis Looming: you make a quorum
[10:12]  Kaseido Quandry waves invisibly at Rose
[10:12]  Rose Springvale: well, quorum away :)
[10:12]  Geri Kuhn: Please stay
[10:12]  Benjamin Noble: Welcome to your new role, Geri! And thank you for taking it on.
[10:12]  Rose Springvale: hi all :)
[10:12]  jamiebryce Infinity smiles
[10:12]  Geri Kuhn: All of you, please stay
[10:12]  Geri Kuhn: even if you can't see
[10:12]  Racheal Chevalier: Hi Rose
[10:12]  Geri Kuhn: Thank you Ben
[10:13]  Rose Springvale: ahh :)
[10:13]  Geri Kuhn: Anyway about the gifts, we will postpone to the next meeting
[10:13]  Geri Kuhn: The first item on our agenda is just a reminder of when our meetings take place. The meeting dates will be posted to our website so that you may include them on your calendar.
[10:14]  Keeter Mactavish: what is the address of the website?
[10:14]  Geri Kuhn: http://slbarassn.ning.com/events/event/listUpcoming
[10:14]  Keeter Mactavish: thank you.
[10:14]  Geri Kuhn: Sure.
[10:14]  Geri Kuhn: The next item on the agenda is land
[10:14]  Geri Kuhn: After our last meeting, we went forward with the purchase of land. Ben is going to talk about our new land and our future plans.
[10:15]  Geri Kuhn: Ben the floor is yours.
[10:15]  Benjamin Noble: We bought Nimue (14, 143, 56) - or therabouts.
[10:15]  Benjamin Noble: It's a flat, green rectangle, and the view is pretty good.
[10:15]  Benjamin Noble: We now need an office.
[10:15]  Keeter Mactavish: what is the size of the parcel?
[10:16]  Benjamin Noble: 2048, I believe?
[10:16]  Benjamin Noble: The group itself owns it.
[10:16]  You decline SL Bar Association, Nimue (48, 135, 59) from A group member named Cat Galileo.
[10:16]  Benjamin Noble: Which is nice, as it shows us in the parcel information.
[10:16]  Rose Springvale raises hand
[10:16]  Benjamin Noble: Go ahead, Rose.
[10:17]  Rose Springvale: would it be helpful to have contribution for those of us who dont' use mainland allocations?
[10:17]  Lexis Looming: Ben donated all the tier
[10:17]  Rose Springvale: i know..but
[10:17]  Benjamin Noble: It very well could be. Right now, we set it up so that I am donating, but getting reimbursed the cost. If we have unused tier out there, that's not a bad iea.
[10:17]  Rose Springvale: as a group, we can contribute our initial 512
[10:17]  Benjamin Noble: idea.
[10:17]  Rose Springvale: i never use mine.
[10:17]  Rose Springvale is afraid of mainland
[10:18]  Lexis Looming: his credit card will be charged and we will pay him
[10:18]  Kaseido Quandry agrees
[10:18]  jamiebryce Infinity: does donated mean what Linden Liab uses that phrasde to mean? it's owned by group, and bven has made the donation into the group, which credits for the land?
[10:18]  Benjamin Noble: If it is unused, it is worth exploring this I think. Though it's probably another discussion. Rose, do you want to talk to Geri about it?
[10:18]  Rose Springvale: that will cut cost to everyone i think.
[10:18]  Rose Springvale: sure,
[10:18]  Keeter Mactavish: raises hand.
[10:18]  Benjamin Noble: Keeter?
[10:19]  Geri Kuhn: Okay, will check that wth Rose.
[10:19]  Lexis Looming: Ahh I see what you mean Rose...being afraid of even premium membership I didn't think of that
[10:19]  Keeter Mactavish: I may be getting a little ahead of the discussion... but are you doing to buy a building or look for someone to build.?
[10:19]  Keeter Mactavish: I'll volunteer to help build. I've done a few things here already.
[10:19]  Benjamin Noble: That's exactly right, Keeter. Great.
[10:19]  jamiebryce Infinity sort of sighs, raises hand
[10:19]  Keeter Mactavish: or transfer this biulding?
[10:19]  Lexis Looming: this building is not ours
[10:19]  Rose Springvale: /smiles at fellow cowardly lawyer
[10:19]  Benjamin Noble: What I want to do as an initial step is get a couple of people, along with me, to evaluate options (prefab, build, etc.)
[10:20]  Benjamin Noble: And then move that forward. Rachael has volunteered already. Do you want to help with that too, Keeter? Anybody else, here or reading the transcript later, can ping me too. We'll try to move fairly quickly on this.
[10:20]  Kaseido Quandry: I know the prefab market pretty well, and a lot of great builders - I wouldn't mind kibitzing on that
[10:20]  Keeter Mactavish: sure.
[10:20]  Keeter Mactavish: I'm in.
[10:21]  jamiebryce Infinity keeps hand up
[10:21]  Benjamin Noble: Great. Kasdido, Keeter, Racheal and me at least, plus anybody else who wants to weigh in. We'll start a discussion in the forums.
[10:21]  Benjamin Noble: Jamie, sorry, didn't see you.
[10:21]  Benjamin Noble: What's up?
[10:21]  jamiebryce Infinity: thanks
[10:21]  jamiebryce Infinity: If I may, I have one question that I know has plagued other SL orgs. I asked this before but still not sure we have an answer. We still seem to have the same kind of inadvertent succession problem that kills many small businesses ...
[10:21]  jamiebryce Infinity: either all is owned by benefactor ben -
[10:21]  jamiebryce Infinity: which works GREAT becaue Ben is a great guy
[10:21]  jamiebryce Infinity: until he leaves
[10:21]  jamiebryce Infinity: or gets sick
[10:21]  Benjamin Noble: I think we've fixed a lot of that now, actually.
[10:21]  Racheal Chevalier: I can't build but know great builders as well:)
[10:21]  jamiebryce Infinity: oir has account problems
[10:21]  jamiebryce Infinity: :) ahem
[10:22]  jamiebryce Infinity: See, when Linden Labs says "contribue" they mean, be smart lawyers and use the group tools
[10:22]  jamiebryce Infinity: Can the land, and the furniture, whatnot, be put into "owned by Group" status? With a time frame? Otherwise we're forever reliant on one avatar account, being always present and active.
[10:22]  Keeter Mactavish: we could creat a SLBA avatar...
[10:22]  jamiebryce Infinity: This is a different ownership solution than "founder owns"
[10:22]  Keeter Mactavish: have everyting rest with that "person"...
[10:22]  jamiebryce Infinity: it;s "group owns"
[10:22]  Lexis Looming: The land is group owned and we have asuch an avatar
[10:23]  Benjamin Noble: Check out the group... it's owned by an administrative account now, I no longer "own" it. This was passed a couple of meetings back, and is largely done.
[10:23]  jamiebryce Infinity: and to wrap up, with lots of respect for Ben, still, I want us to the the adult org thing
[10:23]  Cat Galileo: linden even approved us to share accounts
[10:23]  Cat Galileo: account info
[10:23]  Lexis Looming raises hand
[10:23]  Cat Galileo: for the group avatar
[10:23]  Lexis Looming: Jamie, we have agroup avatar
[10:23]  jamiebryce Infinity: ok .. super .. could I be directed to the posting that I missed with the info?
[10:23]  Geri Kuhn: I think it was at the last meeting
[10:23]  Lexis Looming: and we have written permission from LL to share passwords
[10:24]  Benjamin Noble: Geri, I'm not sure if this fits the land discussion, so I'll give the floor back now.
[10:24]  Cat Galileo: that probably happened since the last meeting - so this would be the "posting" or what have you
[10:24]  Lexis Looming: so the avatar may be passed from board to board
[10:24]  Geri Kuhn: also the emails back an dforth to the exc. board
[10:24]  Geri Kuhn: Okay, thanks Ben
[10:24]  Lexis Looming: the avatar bought the land and owns the group now
[10:24]  Geri Kuhn: And thanks in advance to the committee
[10:24]  jamiebryce Infinity: Ok, sounds good, will go look more. Thanks
[10:24]  Lexis Looming: the avatar also owns the payment boxes
[10:25]  Benjamin Noble: FYI - I think it was two meetings back when it passed. Lexis and I spent a lot of time getting this set up so we'll have continuity if something happens to me, or a president.
[10:25]  Rose Springvale: who is the avatar?
[10:25]  Lexis Looming: the avatar is SLBAdministrator Clarity
[10:25]  Rose Springvale: great, thanks
[10:25]  Rose Springvale: two meetings back would have been the holiday party meeting?
[10:25]  Benjamin Noble: SLBAAdminstrator (two As) I think.
[10:25]  Lexis Looming: I cnat type
[10:25]  Geri Kuhn: All right, next item is about corporate compliance. Lexis, can you bring is up to date?
[10:25]  Geri Kuhn: Neither can I
[10:25]  Geri Kuhn: Hard with thelag
[10:25]  Benjamin Noble: Maybe three then? Not sure. Anyway, late last year. :)
[10:26]  jamiebryce Infinity: :) ok, cool .. if I see that avatar boozing it up in thge illegal casinos, I will let you know right away
[10:26]  Lexis Looming: We are currently working on adopting a conflict of interest policy and applying for tax eempt status
[10:26]  Rose Springvale raises brow at jamie, as you innocently walk by?
[10:26]  Lexis Looming: in California and US Federal
[10:27]  Lexis Looming: In fact if there are any California people who can help with that application it will be appreciated
[10:27]  Lexis Looming: We just about have the federal complete
[10:27]  jamiebryce Infinity: Lexis, is it thought that SLBA will make economic purchases, or solicit funds, on a scale that will make thast a material matter?
[10:27]  Beth Giranamo: I can help - I've done this numerous times
[10:27]  Lexis Looming: It should be done by next meeting
[10:27]  Geri Kuhn: Wow, great, Beth.
[10:28]  jamiebryce Infinity: Super! thx
[10:28]  Lexis Looming: No Jamie...we will be under the $5,000 limit that allows very minimal reproting
[10:28]  jamiebryce Infinity: gotcha thx
[10:28]  Beth Giranamo: California has a super-easy form that can be submitted once you get the federal determination letter.
[10:28]  Lexis Looming: I am making very clear in our application that we have no cash but we have intangible property with a market value
[10:29]  Lexis Looming: and all amounts are reported on Linden Exchange equivalents
[10:29]  Beth Giranamo: I'm new so not sure how far along we are, but I can help with federal, CA Francjise Tax Board, and CA Attorney General registration.
[10:29]  Lexis Looming: We also may need to file a California 2009 tax returnneed
[10:29]  Lexis Looming: return
[10:29]  Lexis Looming: can yiou help with that too Beth?
[10:29]  Abbey Zenith is Offline
[10:30]  Beth Giranamo: Sure.
[10:30]  Lexis Looming: I think the Attorney General form was submitted by Legal
[10:30]  Cat Galileo: thank you Beth that is very generous!
[10:30]  Lexis Looming: We have been working on the federal...I am not sure about the others
[10:30]  Geri Kuhn: Yes, this is awesome.
[10:32]  Geri Kuhn: I saw a bunch of typing ...no text is appearing?
[10:32]  Benjamin Noble: I see yours, no other.
[10:32]  Benjamin Noble: MAybe someone is stuck in an animation loop.
[10:32]  Geri Kuhn smiles.
[10:32]  Geri Kuhn: Hopefully the lag in our new location will be less.
[10:32]  Cat Galileo: that is one issue with this area
[10:32]  Lexis Looming: or a lot of IMs lol
[10:32]  Geri Kuhn: Okay, well Lexis and Beth, thank you for your work.
[10:33]  Beth Giranamo: My pleasure!
[10:33]  Geri Kuhn: We'll move on
[10:33]  Geri Kuhn: to the next agenda item, speakers
[10:34]  Geri Kuhn: I would like to follow an idea that Solmon started when he was president. He occasionally invited people on SL to come and speak to us on topics that he thought our members would be interested in.
[10:34]  Geri Kuhn: I have taken the liberty of inviting ‘Gentle Heron’ from Virtual Ability to come to our next meeting and talk about her Sim
[10:34]  Geri Kuhn: Virtual Ability is also a non profit (Virtual Ability Inc.,). Their website is http://virtualability.org/default.aspx.
[10:35]  Geri Kuhn: Their mission is to enable people with a wide range of disabilities by providing a supporting environment for them to enter and thrive in online virtual worlds like Second Life®.
[10:35]  jamiebryce Infinity grins. That really sounds cool. Regular meeting speaker, CLE or both?
[10:35]  Geri Kuhn: She will be just at our regualr meeting
[10:35]  Geri Kuhn: They do this by providing an accessible environment, helping people with disabilities navigate the landscape and in some instances, getting them the RL tools they need to be on SL.
[10:35]  Geri Kuhn: Gentle Heron is the Chairman of the Board and a founder of Virtual Ability. I had the pleasure of meeting Gentle in real life at the Second Life Conference this past summer in San Francisco.
[10:36]  Cat Galileo: she is a really dedicated person & has been in SL for a long long time
[10:36]  Geri Kuhn: Yes!
[10:36]  Sam4 Courtois: They have a great SIM too.
[10:36]  Geri Kuhn: She has multiple sclerosis and is confined to a wheel chair. You would never know it by all that she has done and continues to do for others on SL.
[10:36]  Lexis Looming: I have met her (or one of my alts has) and she is very dedicated and interesting
[10:36]  Geri Kuhn: After her talk, she has offered to take us to Virtual Ability and give us an “insider tour” of the island. I think you will be impressed by what they have accomplished there and I hope you all will join us for that tour.
[10:37]  Geri Kuhn: Gentle’s talk will tie in nicely with our continuing legal education talk that is scheduled for March 17, 2010 at noon, SL Time.
[10:37]  Keeter Mactavish: St. Patrick's Day.
[10:37]  Geri Kuhn smiles
[10:37]  Auction Hammerer is Online
[10:37]  Geri Kuhn: We will be having a seminar on bias in the legal profession – lawyers with disabilities. Linda Batiste and Beth Loy from the Job Accommodation Network from West Virginia University (http://www.jan.wvu.edu/ )
[9:37]  Geri Kuhn: will be discussing the professional work environment for lawyers with disabilities. They will discuss barriers faced by attorneys with disabilities and what employers need to do in order to accommodate lawyers with disabilities.
[9:38]  Henri DeCuir is Online
[9:38]  Geri Kuhn: This seminar will be free and for California attorneys, it will help you obtain one hour of training related to elimination of bias in the legal profession. I would encourage non-California attorneys to attend as well as I think the talk will be quite interesting.
[9:38]  Geri Kuhn: The Job Accommodation Network has a presence on SL and they have given presentations on SL before. They will be using voice but their talk will be transcribed as well
[9:39]  Geri Kuhn: I have written a press release for the event. If you have a blog or have a place to post information about the seminar, please let me know. I would really like to get the word out.
[9:39]  Geri Kuhn: More details will be posted on our webssite. How to sign up, etc.
[9:39]  Sam4 Courtois: Is taht good for CLE for non-cal lawyers?
[9:39]  Cat Galileo: I will need to delegate the MCLE duties to someone. My work has scheduled a non-negotiable event that day.
[9:40]  Geri Kuhn: Ok, Cat, I can take care of that if you tell me what to do.
[9:40]  Cat Galileo: Sam4, many states accept Cal, is my understanding, but I am only able to certify for Cal.
[9:40]  Geri Kuhn: And Sam there may be a way of getting CLE in your state but you will have to check that out.
[9:41]  Rose Springvale: usually you need to send it in before hand
[9:41]  Sam4 Courtois: Your past programs ahve been accepted in Alaska and Washington
[9:41]  Cat Galileo: excellent
[9:41]  Henri DeCuir is Offline
[9:41]  Sam4 Courtois: so I just wanted to make sure this was alongthe same vein
[9:41]  jamiebryce Infinity is Online
[9:41]  Cat Galileo: yes it will be certified for Cal. MCLE (bias) by Fitz2 Consulting, just as the others have been
[9:41]  Geri Kuhn: Jamie will be speaking in April , date not yet set.
[9:41]  Sam4 Courtois: Excellent - Thanks
[9:42]  Geri Kuhn: If you have ideas for other speakers, or want to speak, please talk to Cat.
[9:42]  Sam4 Courtois: You r orgrams are always great
[9:42]  Sam4 Courtois: porgrams*
[9:42]  Geri Kuhn: Cat, this may be a good place for you to talk about the website stuff.
[9:42]  Cat Galileo: just don't say pograms and we're all good
[9:42]  Sam4 Courtois: lol
[9:42]  Cat Galileo: Ok
[9:42]  Sam4 Courtois: sorry
[9:43]  Rose Springvale: lawyers, in most states you can get CLE credit for teaching as well as attending too
[9:43]  Geri Kuhn: just a typo
[9:43]  Geri Kuhn: no worries
[9:43]  Cat Galileo: I have been running the various web sites for the organization for a while
[9:43]  Sam4 Courtois: "Presentations"
[9:43]  Cat Galileo: slba.info (owned and hosted by Ben); slbarassn.ning.com, twitter, facebook
[9:44]  Cat Galileo: I'm currently burned out a bit and I want to step back from that so I can concentrate on the programs
[9:44]  Cat Galileo: I would like to transition that to another volunteer. needs to know enough about websitse/html/ftp to maintain and change the website
[9:45]  Cat Galileo: if we continue using Ben's domain
[9:45]  Rose Springvale keeps her hands down, knows enough to break it good if you want that :)
[9:45]  Geri Kuhn smiles.
[9:45]  jamiebryce Infinity: well, doesn't Ning self-host at ning.com?
[9:45]  Cat Galileo: yes. Ning can be run without html and ftp knowledge.
[9:45]  Cat Galileo: but it is expensive to get rid of ads.
[9:45]  Rose Springvale: how much?
[9:45]  jamiebryce Infinity: if all the content's there then all you;d breally need at the other site is a redict and maybe a front page
[9:46]  jamiebryce Infinity: *redirect
[9:46]  Cat Galileo: it would take some trnasitioning, not all the content's there
[9:46]  Cat Galileo: but could be
[9:46]  jamiebryce Infinity: might be worth polling people about whether they care about the ads :)
[9:46]  Cat Galileo: I will have to look at the ad price but it was enough that I thought SLBA shouldn't use its scarce resources on it
[9:46]  jamiebryce Infinity: Cat, you already know that I volunteered to help you with that if you like
[9:46]  Rose Springvale: do we care if we have ads?
[9:47]  Cat Galileo: GO AD-FREE $19.95 per month
[9:47]  Cat Galileo: ty jamie. let's talk
[9:47]  Lexis Looming: If it keeps our dues down to $500L a year I LOVE ads
[9:47]  jamiebryce Infinity nods
[9:47]  Geri Kuhn: Maybe we should entertain a motion about the ads
[9:47]  Cat Galileo: I don't remember stuff :( it's part of why i want to transition the job
[9:48]  Rose Springvale: maybe we should let jamie and cat talk and see what they recommend?
[9:48]  Geri Kuhn: Or not...okay, well Jamie, thank you in advance
[9:48]  Geri Kuhn: Yes
[9:48]  Geri Kuhn: Cat, thank you for all of the incredible work you have done.
[9:49]  Lexis Looming applauds Cat
[9:49]  Rose Springvale throws beads
[9:49]  Rose Springvale: oh, wrong celebration...
[9:49]  Cat Galileo: lol thanks rose *catches them
[9:49]  Benjamin Noble: /applauds too. Cat has done a huge amount of work on this stuff over the last few years.
[9:49]  jamiebryce Infinity: hear, hear
[9:49]  Benjamin Noble: Thank you, Cat!
[9:49]  Geri Kuhn applauds too.
[9:49]  Geri Kuhn: Yes, it has been great.
[9:49]  Geri Kuhn: Still is.
[9:50]  Geri Kuhn: Not talking about you in the past yet
[9:50]  Cat Galileo: well, i think it's fun to play with ? thanks you tho
[9:50]  Racheal Chevalier: Thank you Cat!
[9:50]  Cat Galileo: it's actually been good training for my "rl" career too, I'm social-media-girl at work now
[9:50]  Geri Kuhn: Next item on the agenda for today is about the sections.
[9:51]  jamiebryce Infinity: and of coure Cat has been the driver of our CLE program too, a real service to real lawyers so - er - don't let her escape :D
[9:51]  Geri Kuhn: Defintiely not!
[9:51]  Geri Kuhn: Higgs couldn’t be here today but he sent me this email.
[9:51]  Cat Galileo: 9 minutes ?
[9:51]  Sam4 Courtois: Bar the doors
[9:51]  Geri Kuhn: “Please ask the meeting attendees whether there are any volunteers for chairing one of the divisions, or whether they have a notion for another category of division that they would like to start up and chair.
[9:51]  Geri Kuhn: Thanks Cat
[9:52]  Geri Kuhn: I would suggest that we liberally allow folks to use the divisions as a structure through which they can form groups with other lawyers to explore issues of common interest. If someone wants to form a SLBA tax section, or SLBA animal rights law section, I would vote to encourage it.”
[9:52]  Geri Kuhn: So, if you have an idea for a section please let Higgs know.
[9:52]  Rose Springvale raises hand
[9:52]  Geri Kuhn: It would also be helpful to let Ben know as they are planning for rooms in the new building.
[9:52]  Geri Kuhn: Yes Rose.
[9:52]  Cat Galileo: *raises hand too
[9:53]  Rose Springvale: i don't know about the rest of you, but i'm way oversectioned with interest groups content centered in rl
[9:53]  Rose Springvale: but
[9:53]  Rose Springvale: what we can offer here that is unique is the opportunity to socialize with other sl law professionals
[9:53]  Rose Springvale: networking with people in the same world as we are
[9:54]  Rose Springvale: would love to see us do more of that
[9:54]  Geri Kuhn: This is an excellent point.
[9:54]  Geri Kuhn: Please help us to plan an event.
[9:55]  Geri Kuhn: :)
[9:55]  Rose Springvale: well, what about something casual but more frequent? coffee at the courthouse kind of thing
[9:55]  Auction Hammerer is Offline
[9:55]  Geri Kuhn: I love coffee
[9:55]  Cat Galileo: would folks be interested in a monthly topical discussion, maybe on alternate weeks from the general meeting?
[9:55]  Cat Galileo: and maybe at a different day/hour
[9:55]  jamiebryce Infinity smiles. I don't want to deny Higgs and others with interest their experiment. Still, honestly, for me, this section thing falls waaay on the side of "more internal org stuff" .. on the Justice Scales of SLBA effort, which I really do wish were tipping more heavily towards "actual activities" and not "internal org". If the sections attract a larger number of members and events, god bless 'em.
[9:56]  Cat Galileo: set a topic and have folks come chat about it and socialize
[9:56]  Benjamin Noble: Maybe the sections will get events organized that we don't get to as an organization. That's my hope, anyway.
[9:56]  Rose Springvale: i'd be happy to work on that Cat, and maybe some recruiting
[9:56]  Dreamingen Writer is Online
[9:56]  Kaseido Quandry agrees with Jamie, and notes that more real learning often happens at social networking events
[9:56]  Rose Springvale: lots of lawyers have never heard of us
[9:56]  Geri Kuhn: Sounds great, Rose.
[9:56]  Rose Springvale: sorry, geri
[9:56]  jamiebryce Infinity: Cat, picking up on your comment - what about 1 meeting per month, but 15 minutes TOPS adminicrud, and the rest substance or social? :D
[9:56]  Geri Kuhn: And I totally agree with you Kaseido
[9:56]  Cat Galileo: *raises hand, trying to be polite
[9:56]  Benjamin Noble: 100% agreed re: social too. Those events tend to be well attended.
[9:57]  Geri Kuhn: Yes Cat
[9:57]  Benjamin Noble should probably start raising his hand, now that he thinks about it.
[9:57]  Cat Galileo: about the sections, would they be communicating off line, and if so, where/how? we've had section areas on the forum for years with no traffic.
[9:57]  Cat Galileo: there's room for it on ning site, but same deal
[9:58]  Cat Galileo: and I agree with Jamie and rose, FWIW
[9:58]  Sam4 Courtois: I am not exactly sure what you mean by social, however, I do agree that there should be more time for conversation off the agenda, which always seems jammed and rushed
[9:58]  Geri Kuhn: Well it appears from the discussion right now that people aren't interested in sections
[9:58]  Rocky Vallejo is Online
[9:58]  Geri Kuhn: So maybe we need to move in alternate directions
[9:58]  Sam4 Courtois: It seems like "good of the order" might be a psotitive addition to theagenda, at least
[9:58]  Racheal Chevalier: possible to have something like--section forums on the webstie?
[9:58]  Geri Kuhn: I think perhaps that should stay on the Ning website
[9:58]  Geri Kuhn: exactly
[9:59]  Cat Galileo: we've had em fo yearsRacheal
[9:59]  Racheal Chevalier: sections can freely decide when/how to meet, organize, discuss agenada with members, right?
[9:59]  Geri Kuhn: And if people do want to organize around topics, they can
[9:59]  Racheal Chevalier: ok, ty Cat
[9:59]  Rose Springvale: maybe we should seed them with probing questions
[9:59]  Geri Kuhn: Yes, Rachel
[9:59]  Rose Springvale: lawyers love to give opinions :)
[9:59]  Cat Galileo: on ning you can start your own, so the SLBA and Animal Rights section could spontenously create one
[9:59]  Cat Galileo: within our current site
[10:00]  Geri Kuhn: So perhaps those who wish to create sections may do so.
[10:00]  Racheal Chevalier: I personally favor the section idea because then each of us with specialty can get together and work on something more practical instead of going through the org
[10:01]  Geri Kuhn: If Rose, Cat, can come up with some ideas and bring them to the next meeting?
[10:01]  Rose Springvale: smiles. sure
[10:01]  Cat Galileo: ok
[10:01]  Geri Kuhn: Thanks
[10:01]  Cat Galileo hopes she remembers
[10:01]  Geri Kuhn: :)
[10:02]  Geri Kuhn: I'll remind you
[10:02]  Geri Kuhn: There is just one item on the agenda
[10:02]  Geri Kuhn: I want to throw out the idea
[10:02]  Geri Kuhn: I mean not throw it out
[10:02]  Geri Kuhn: I mean throw it out for consideration
[10:02]  Geri Kuhn: Ugh
[10:02]  Cat Galileo: lol
[10:02]  Rose Springvale: hehe
[10:02]  Geri Kuhn: I'll just mention it
[10:02]  Geri Kuhn: I think one of the issues with any group on SL is how to attract new members. It seems difficult to bring new members in who are not currently on SL. I believe that while we should continue to bring folks from RL into SL, we should also look for members on SL itself.
[10:03]  Lexis Looming waits to catch whatever is thrown out at him
[10:03]  Geri Kuhn: hehehe
[10:03]  Geri Kuhn: I think that most people do not know we exist and I hope that we can change it. One way we can integrate more into the SL community is join TechSoup.org. (http://home.techsoup.org/pages/default.aspx
[10:03]  Geri Kuhn: According to their website, they are one of the most comprehensive technology resources for NGOs in the world. Working with corporate donors, including Microsoft, Adobe, Cisco, and Symantec, TechSoup provides nongovernmental organizations, nonprofits, libraries, and community-based organizations with the latest professional hardware, software, and services they need.
[10:03]  Cat Galileo: I think that is a good idea. they are also long-term, well established, and pro-nonprofit
[10:04]  Geri Kuhn: As we are a non-profit, we should take advantage of whatever resources there are. TechSoup owns an island on SL and they have gathered all non-profits there. They meet once a week and are active both in SL and in the virtual world.
[10:04]  Cat Galileo: the library/education folks in SL work with them
[10:04]  Geri Kuhn: I would like it if someone would be wiling to be our liaison to them. I think it would be quite interesting to meet with others and find out what they do.
[10:04]  Geri Kuhn: For them, I don’t think they know that a bar association exits so it would be a way to get the word out about us by becoming active with them. Is anyone interested in being a liaison?
[10:05]  Cat Galileo: what would that involve? as librarian and vp-communications i should probably volunteer ?
[10:05]  Sam4 Courtois: The make software available to qualifying non-profits cheap too.
[10:05]  Geri Kuhn: Well, Cat, I don't want you feel overlaoded
[10:05]  Benjamin Noble: TechSoup is a respected org, for sure. I've talked to them about various things in different capacities over the last few years and think that this could be a great fit.
[10:05]  Racheal Chevalier: i will do it if noone else
[10:05]  Geri Kuhn: I think it involves being on SL for at least two hours a week
[10:05]  Cat Galileo whew
[10:06]  Racheal Chevalier: or help cat:D
[10:06]  Geri Kuhn: But that might just to get space on their sim
[10:06]  Rose Springvale: /meties cat's arms down so she can't volunteer anymore
[10:06]  Geri Kuhn: We probably don't need space
[10:07]  jamiebryce Infinity: well, so, the sesnse of the meeting is to go for it, and Geri will pin down who;s going to do the liaisoning, yes?
[10:07]  Lexis Looming: Maybe we can invite a representative to speak at one of our meetings?
[10:07]  Geri Kuhn: Yes, that would be a great idea Lexis.
[10:07]  Benjamin Noble likes Lexis's idea.
[10:07]  Geri Kuhn: I'll ask them
[10:07]  Sam4 Courtois: hear hear
[10:08]  Geri Kuhn: And Racheal, I'll talk to you after the bigexam
[10:08]  Geri Kuhn: and see how you are feeling
[10:08]  Geri Kuhn: about volunteering
[10:08]  Cat Galileo: good point
[10:08]  Racheal Chevalier: Yes, please, Geri:)
[10:09]  Geri Kuhn: In the meantime, we can all have a look at their SIm, and website and see what they are about.
[10:09]  Geri Kuhn: Okay, is there any other business to be discussed?
[10:09]  Lexis Looming: Congratulations Geri on your first meeting...Good Job!
[10:09]  Cat Galileo: /cheer
[10:09]  Geri Kuhn grins.
[10:09]  Geri Kuhn: Thanks.

[10:09]  Dreamingen Writer: /applauds

[10:10]  Racheal Chevalier: Thanks, Geri!
