June 12, 2010
[10:05] Geri Kuhn: Welcome to the June meeting of the Sl Bar Assoc.
[10:05] Geri Kuhn: Yes, to start off about that blood
[10:05] jamiebryce Infinityjamiebryce Infinity chukcles and looks up
[10:05] Geri Kuhn: Oh I should say that a transcript of the meeting will be on our website.
[10:06] jamiebryce Infinity: so, um, who has land control power here? (don;t tell me: Ben only?)
[10:06] Geri Kuhn: Ben is still checking into this problem with our neighbor
[10:06] Geri Kuhn: We submitted a complaint to Linden
[10:06] Geri Kuhn: The blood from the ceiling
[10:06] Sam4 Courtois: I think it adds color to the meetings
[10:06] Cat Galileo: should be the board controlled owner avatar
[10:06] Agenda FarometAgenda Faromet snickers at Sam.
[10:06] Cat Galileo: ?
[10:06] Soro Dagostino: Who's the nieghbor? BP?
[10:07] Geri KuhnGeri Kuhn laughs
[10:07] Agenda FarometAgenda Faromet groans.
[10:07] jamiebryce Infinity: just going to have to stop wearing light suits here,. Agenda
[10:07] Geri Kuhn: Yes, no white
[10:07] Agenda Faromet: Hey, I wore a vest to match!
[10:07] Geri Kuhn: Well to start with our first agenda item
[10:08] Geri Kuhn: The furniture design committee is still working
[10:08] Geri Kuhn: Actually Yoss is getting married today so he i kind of busy.
[10:09] Sam4 Courtois: He needs to rethink his priorities
[10:09] Geri Kuhn: So hopefully by next mnth we'll have some news.
[10:09] Geri Kuhn: :)
[10:09] Agenda Faromet: Congratulations to Yoss! (Maybe he'll see that in the log.)
[10:10] Geri Kuhn: Hopefully he doesn't mind me telling everyone this.
[10:11] Geri Kuhn: As to the next item , the coffee chat. I can't remember who was there. Does anyone have any feedback from that? Good?
[10:11] Agenda FarometAgenda Faromet raises a hand.
[10:11] Geri Kuhn: Yes, Agneda
[10:11] Geri Kuhn: Agenda
[10:12] Agenda Faromet: I was there! It was a /fantastic/ idea. A lot of people showed up that don't normally show up to meetings, and the atmosphere was far more casual and conducive to chatting.
[10:12] Agenda Faromet: I'm very glad we did that, and I will definitely go to more. I hope we can do more than one a month.
[10:12] Geri Kuhn: Thanks Agenda.
[10:13] Cat Galileo: great to hear
[10:13] Geri Kuhn: Was anyone else there who wants to say anthing?
[10:13] Geri Kuhn: *anything?
[10:13] Geri Kuhn: I also was there and defnitely agree with you Agenda.
[10:13] Geri Kuhn: I thought it was really nice
[10:14] Geri Kuhn: Rose sent me a notecard so I'm going to find it and copy here what she wrote.
[10:14] Agenda Faromet: Yes, I'm surprised Rose isn't at the meeting -- she's usually here.
[10:15] Geri Kuhn: The first SLBA social hour was held on May 19 in the Peoney Field Gallery which featured an exhibit on Art and Law. A nice crowd of about a dozen people dropped by and it was great getting to know each other better. General consensus was that we would like to do it again.
As an added bonus, Peoney Field donated a copy of her work Brown v Board of Education, to the SLBA.
[10:15] Soro Dagostino: Running a meeting of her town councilk in CDS
[10:15] Soro Dagostino: Rose is.
[10:15] Agenda Faromet: Ahh.
[10:15] Geri KuhnGeri Kuhn nods.
[10:15] Geri Kuhn: Would anyone be interested in hosting another chat for June?
[10:16] Dyanna Saxmundham: What's involved in hosting?
[10:16] Geri Kuhn: Well finding a place, picking a date and being there.
[10:17] Geri Kuhn: Interested Dyanna?
[10:17] Geri Kuhn: Not to put you onthe spot or anything
[10:17] Agenda FarometAgenda Faromet might be able to do it -- it's the whole finding a place part that might be hard.
[10:17] Geri KuhnGeri Kuhn grins.
[10:17] Soro Dagostino: afk, sorry.
[10:18] Geri Kuhn: I think Peony may be willing to allow us to use her space again
[10:18] Agenda Faromet: Well, then, I'll volunteer.
[10:18] Geri Kuhn: Terrific
[10:18] Sam4 Courtois: May I ask how many people attended?
[10:18] jamiebryce Infinity: oh we can get space anywhere. i wonder how much of the success last time was due to the time of day?
[10:18] Geri Kuhn: I think there were about 10?
[10:18] Geri Kuhn: Does that sound right Agenda?
[10:19] Agenda Faromet: I think so -- people came in and out, but that's about right.
[10:19] Geri Kuhn: And we held it at about 4:00 SL Time
[10:19] Baeric Constantine: There were about 10+ people there - yes
[10:19] Geri Kuhn: 4:00 p.m.
[10:20] Geri Kuhn: So it might be nice to try to change the time and see what happens.
[10:20] Geri Kuhn: But I'll leave that up to you Agenda.
[10:20] Geri Kuhn: Can you let me know what you decide, and if you can't find a space, I'll help you with that.
[10:21] jamiebryce Infinity: Great idea in any case. thanks.
[10:21] Soro Dagostino: Rose could too.
[10:21] Agenda FarometAgenda Faromet nods. "Mind if I take an informal poll of those here now?"
[10:21] Geri Kuhn: Sure, great idea
[10:21] Agenda Faromet: Is 4:00 SLT good for you, or would you be happier with earlier / later?
[10:21] Baeric Constantine: Unless I have other committments I would be there too
[10:22] Dyanna Saxmundham: it could work for me, depending on the day and week :)
[10:22] TelLagu Swords: 4:00 PM SLT is okay, subject to those pesky clients, judges, other attorneys, etc.
[10:22] Geri KuhnGeri Kuhn laughs.
[10:23] Lexis Looming: Prioritize TelLagu
[10:23] Legal Writer: ditto
[10:23] Sam4 Courtois: Being close to the edge of the world, 3 p.m. on a work day mad it impossible for me to attend last time.
[10:23] Agenda FarometAgenda Faromet grins. "I'm looking at either this coming Wednesday or the 23rd, depending on when I can get a space."
[10:23] Sam4 Courtois: made*
[10:24] ZHAO-II: 9% memory free
[10:24] Geri Kuhn: Well how about on the 23rd so we can give people notice?
[10:24] Agenda Faromet: Pfft, notice, you mean people don't spend every waking hour on SL?
[10:25] Geri KuhnGeri Kuhn laughs
[10:25] jamiebryce Infinityjamiebryce Infinity smiles politely.
[10:25] Geri Kuhn: Well of the folks that are here, is one day better than the other?
[10:26] jamiebryce Infinityjamiebryce Infinity frowns, pats jacket pocket .. dammit, where's my motion for the bylaws amendment name change to "Get A Life Bar Association"?
[10:26] Agenda FarometAgenda Faromet has a life...has two!
[10:26] Geri Kuhn: Maybe even three.
[10:26] jamiebryce Infinity: well, exactly, i like to think that makes SLBA unique among SL groups...
[10:27] jamiebryce Infinityjamiebryce Infinity smiles, rolls eyes
[10:27] Baeric Constantine: Life is like a diamond....multi-faceted....
[10:27] Lexis LoomingLexis Looming counts........If each alt counst as a separtate life........
[10:27] Geri Kuhn: Yes....exactly Lexis.
[10:27] Baeric ConstantineBaeric Constantine has one avie - its enough already
[10:27] Soro Dagostino: You know when your in trouble -- when you can't tell one from the other.
[10:28] Baeric Constantine: LOL Soro
[10:28] Geri Kuhn: Well Agenda, let me know which day you choose.
[10:28] Lexis Looming: when one remembers things only another knows
[10:28] Geri Kuhn: I'll send out a group announcement.
[10:28] Agenda Faromet: I'm going to stick with the 23rd at 4. I'll run it long so late-comers will be welcome.
[10:29] Sam4 Courtois: That would be good.
[10:29] Geri Kuhn: Okay great,, everyone mark your calendars.
[10:29] Agenda FarometAgenda Faromet writes it in big red letters on her calendar.
[10:29] Sam4 Courtois: I did show up very late, and the party was completely over.
[10:29] Geri Kuhn: awww
[10:29] Geri Kuhn: We'll stick around longer this time.
[10:30] Agenda Faromet: Aww. Well, maybe we'll hold it somewhere with music and dancing this time.
[10:30] Geri Kuhn: Thanks Agenda, for volunteering to do this.
[10:30] Agenda Faromet: Sure!
[10:30] jamiebryce Infinity: for further thought - do we want to try a colocation with any ABA meetings again this year That's be august & i thought worked rather well last time,
[10:30] Geri Kuhn: I just noticed that Cat changed her clothes.
[10:30] Cat Galileo: too hot to wear a full suit
[10:31] Geri KuhnGeri Kuhn smiles.
[10:31] Geri Kuhn: I think that is a great idea Jamie.
[10:31] Lexis Looming: don't want to drip blood on your good clothes?
[10:31] Geri Kuhn: Would you be willing to arrange this?
[10:31] Soro Dagostino: Suggestion . . . the ABA is going into LinkedIn -- big time.
[10:31] jamiebryce Infinityjamiebryce Infinity looks around for Legal - didn;t he set that up with ABA SciTech, in 2009?
[10:31] Geri Kuhn: He did.
[10:31] jamiebryce Infinity: Geri I am happy to inqure, anyway
[10:31] Soro Dagostino: Lots of subgroups.
[10:31] Geri Kuhn: That would be great.
[10:32] Geri Kuhn: I'm sure Legal can help us out as well.
[10:32] Geri Kuhn: As he is the chair now of a subcomitee I think
[10:32] Geri Kuhn: Sorry for my spelling.
[10:32] Geri Kuhn: Okay the next topic on our agenda is our upcoming elections.
[10:33] Geri Kuhn: We will be having elections in August for all of the board positions. I hope all of you will consider running.
[10:33] TelLagu Swords: Running how fast? Which direction?
[10:33] Geri Kuhn: Nominations will be accepted until our next meeting in July. You may submit a nomination in the forums. If you have questions about any of the positions, you may ask a current board member.
[10:33] TelLagu Swords: (Sorry...couldn't resist)
[10:33] Geri KuhnGeri Kuhn laughs.
[10:33] Geri Kuhn: Good joke
[10:33] Geri Kuhn: I think you will find it a rewarding experience to be on the board. Personally I have found it to be a lot of fun and a great networking experience both personally and professionally.
[10:34] Geri Kuhn: Cat , can you give a link to the forums here?
[10:34] Geri Kuhn: The website address?
[10:34] Soro Dagostino: afk . . .
[10:35] Cat Galileo: the Ning?
[10:35] Cat Galileo: are we committing to that? or the old one
[10:35] Geri Kuhn: Where the forums are
[10:35] Geri Kuhn: I think where you will put them.
[10:35] Geri Kuhn: for nominations
[10:36] Cat Galileo: http://slbarassn.ning.com/forum
[10:36] TelLagu Swords: BTW, the forum link on the top of SLBA.INFO seems to be broken.
[10:36] Cat Galileo: yeah i have been trying to open it
[10:36] Geri Kuhn: Thanks.
[10:36] Cat Galileo: Ning it is
[10:36] Geri Kuhn: I'll send out a general annoucement as well .
[10:36] Cat Galileo: something else to bug Ben about :(
[10:37] Geri Kuhn: At the next meeting, we will hear from the candidates who are running for office.
[10:37] Lexis Looming: I suggest we send a few anouncements during the time nominations are open
[10:37] Geri Kuhn: Yes, good idea, Lexis.
[10:37] jamiebryce Infinityjamiebryce Infinity Geri - Ok if we briefly ask here for opinions about a bylaw change to roll back the timing of 2011 elections?
[10:37] Geri Kuhn: Sure one sec, Jamie.
[10:37] Geri Kuhn: Let me just give the timefine for now
[10:37] Geri Kuhn: line
[10:37] Geri Kuhn: So nominations will be open until our next meeting.
[10:38] Sam4 Courtois: Speaking of Ning - what was the name of the website people were moving to, now that Ning is going to charge a fee?
[10:38] Geri Kuhn: The candidates will give a brief speech at the next meeting
[10:38] Geri Kuhn: And we will hold elections after that .
[10:38] Geri Kuhn: The new terms will start in August
[10:38] Geri Kuhn: Board terms are for a year
[10:39] Geri Kuhn: I believe the bylaw require the real names of the president and vps.
[10:39] Geri Kuhn: Is that correct Lexis?
[10:40] Lexis Looming: for the 501c3 all members have to report names
[10:40] Agenda Faromet: Yeah, I thought it was all board members.
[10:40] jamiebryce Infinity: yah, i thought that was ALL directors
[10:40] Geri Kuhn: Okay, thanks.
[10:40] Lexis Looming: right Jamie "board" members
[10:40] Geri Kuhn: So that is something to keep in mind.
[10:41] Soro Dagostino: Public document
[10:41] Geri Kuhn: Currently the timeline for elections is in our bylaws.
[10:41] Geri Kuhn: We were discussiing whether or not to change the bylaws (not for this year) but possibly for next to hold elections in the fall.
[10:42] Geri Kuhn: Does anyone have any opinion as to this?
[10:42] jamiebryce Infinity: well
[10:42] jamiebryce Infinity: Ok, thx, I guess I've already said it in a nutshell -- our fancy corporate bylaws lock us into a july-august election cycle. The Q is whether that's a problem for vacations & dead periods ... and if we should consider in the future going over to something more tike September. Board discussed this briefly and we were wondering what people think about the merits. If if were attractive, it might be a 2010 bylaw amendment to go into effect with the 2011 election cycle.
[10:42] Sam4 Courtois: Why?
[10:42] jamiebryce Infinity: the arg is that august's dead, might get a more roducts set of candidates, and more voters, later
[10:42] jamiebryce Infinity: *more robust
[10:42] Geri Kuhn: The thought was that people take off during the summer.
[10:42] jamiebryce Infinity: but you tell us :)
[10:43] Soro Dagostino: After the rain start -- and we all sit down in fronto of our computers again.
[10:44] Geri KuhnGeri Kuhn grins.
[10:44] Baeric Constantine: why not include a minim, then, if that minim is not met it rolls over to the next month instead of changingthe existing law - add one
[10:44] Geri Kuhn: I guess folks here aren't away from their computers.
[10:44] Agenda Faromet: I'm a law student, I'm never away from my computer.
[10:45] Agenda FarometAgenda Faromet sobs quietly.
[10:45] Lexis Looming: we all have laptops and sl is no ont eh iphone...lol we are always logged in
[10:45] Lexis Looming: now on the iPhone*
[10:45] Geri Kuhn: It gets worse as a lawyer, Agenda.
[10:45] Baeric ConstantineBaeric Constantine wishes he has a laptop
[10:45] Agenda FarometAgenda Faromet sobs less quietly.
[10:45] Geri KuhnGeri Kuhn grins.
[10:45] Sam4 Courtois: Vacation? What's that?
[10:46] Lexis LoomingLexis Looming wishes sometimes he didn't
[10:46] Baeric Constantine: Sam, a vacation is the few secs break between clients
[10:46] Geri Kuhn: Okay, well we will have elections as planned and we will see how it goes.
[10:46] jamiebryce Infinityjamiebryce Infinity chuckles. OK, so we take it that our CURRENT group feels no problems with August. Are we trying to reac h out more broadly, or not? And would timing matter to that?
[10:46] Sam4 Courtois: Break? What's that?
[10:46] Baeric Constantine: its too late you missed it
[10:46] Soro Dagostino: I move it be changed to November.
[10:47] Lexis Looming: Rather than makle a motin, let's discuss it in the forums
[10:47] Baeric Constantine: I am hoping to start my next Law course in September
[10:47] jamiebryce Infinity: Soro, if we want to amend the bylaws, and there's some sentiment for that here, we could bring an amendment next month to go on the same ballot as the Board vote
[10:47] Agenda Faromet: jamiebryce, does the board see meeting attendance grow appreciably during the autumn months?
[10:47] Geri Kuhn: Yes, I think it warants more discussion
[10:47] jamiebryce Infinity: super question Agenda
[10:48] jamiebryce Infinity: i thin so but several here have watched long that I
[10:48] jamiebryce Infinity: *longer than
[10:48] Soro Dagostino: Hmmmm, motion dies for lack of a second.
[10:48] Sam4 Courtois: I think we ought to get this resolved before September, before the hoard returns
[10:49] Lexis Looming: I see no rush this would take effect in 13 months
[10:49] Geri Kuhn: Well the 2010 election will proceed on the current schedule
[10:49] Agenda FarometAgenda Faromet nods. "If there's a substantial difference between meeting attendance in the summer and meeting attendance in the autumn, then I would agree."
[10:49] Geri Kuhn: So we are talking about 2011
[10:50] Cat Galileo: however
[10:50] Geri Kuhn: The only meeting where I 've noticed the fewest at was in August.
[10:50] Cat Galileo: that would mean the officers we are currently electing would hold office longer
[10:50] Lexis Looming: we can all keep our eyes open and count attendenance over the next 4 months
[10:50] Cat Galileo: so we would want to get it worked out before TOO long.
[10:51] Geri Kuhn: That is a good point Cat.
[10:51] Baeric Constantine: agreed Cat
[10:51] Geri Kuhn: Don't want to deter folks though :)
[10:52] Geri Kuhn: Well perhaps we should inlcude it on the agenda for the next meeting.
[10:52] Geri Kuhn: So people will know in advance
[10:52] Geri Kuhn: I guess folks running should consider that their terms may be a bit longer.
[10:53] Baeric Constantine: perhaps raise in a few meetings?
[10:53] Baeric Constantine: it* ^
[10:53] jamiebryce Infinity: kk :)
[10:53] Geri Kuhn: Will see what people have to think in the forums
[10:54] Geri Kuhn: Lexis, I know we should probably discuss dues.
[10:54] Lexis Looming: Can we send a notice out that a forum discussion has started?
[10:54] Geri Kuhn: Do you remember when they were collected last year?
[10:54] Lexis Looming: OK Dues
[10:55] Lexis Looming: I believe they are due by July 1st
[10:55] Lexis Looming: It is time to pay our annual dues of $500L. Please be sure to pay through the dues box at the bottom of the stairs. Due to the way the group profile is made, we can't tell who pays through it. You will get credit and not be removed from the group if you pay in the box.
[10:55] jamiebryce Infinity: Do we have a removal date too?
[10:55] Lexis Looming: shameless plug....now that i have the floor: The Credential Verification box is there also. We have not han any new credential requests in quite a while. if you are interested, pay the box and fill out the form which you get in the forums. Send the completed application to me.
[10:56] Lexis Looming: I think Ben removed people starting in august last year...We need to set that date
[10:56] Geri Kuhn: Not at all a shameless plug
[10:56] Agenda Faromet: I want vampire credentials. I think we've earned them.
[10:56] Lexis Looming: lol
[10:56] Geri KuhnGeri Kuhn laughs.
[10:57] TelLagu Swords: Agenda, you're not a lawyer yet; your teeth are too short.
[10:57] Agenda Faromet: Curses!
[10:57] jamiebryce Infinityjamiebryce Infinity looks up, wipes off a drip of something
[10:57] Geri Kuhn: Do people have thoughts about a deadline for dues?
[10:57] Geri Kuhn: A month?
[10:58] Soro Dagostino: Two - at least.
[10:58] Agenda Faromet: How about setting the deadline for dues at the same time as the election?
[10:58] Agenda Faromet: I.e., you can't vote unless you're paid up?
[10:58] TelLagu Swords: Geri: Are email notices sent? If so, then 45 days thereafter would seem reasonable, at least to me.
[10:58] Lexis Looming: I agree with Agenda, that would be the ideal rule
[10:58] Lexis Looming: but it wouldn't work fairly this year
[10:58] Geri KuhnGeri Kuhn nods.
[10:58] Sam4 Courtois: Agenda is right
[10:58] TelLagu Swords: TelLagu agrees with Agenda.
[10:58] Sam4 Courtois: Pay to play
[10:59] Lexis Looming: We have not doen that in the past
[10:59] Lexis Looming: so people should be given plenty of notice
[10:59] Geri Kuhn: It looks like we may have to amend the bylaws on that point as well.
[10:59] Lexis Looming: we don't want to shoot ourselves in the foot and exclude too many people
[10:59] Agenda Faromet: Bah, due process.
[10:59] Sam4 Courtois: If you pay double, you can vote twice
[10:59] Geri Kuhn: hehehe
[10:59] jamiebryce Infinity: amend how so, Geri?
[11:00] Geri Kuhn: Well set dates for things
[11:00] Lexis Looming: there is no prohibition agains have alts join
[11:00] Geri Kuhn: but anyway
[11:00] Lexis Looming: one avi one vote
[11:00] Sam4 Courtois: Just like Congress
[11:00] Lexis Looming: exactly
[11:01] Lexis Looming: just like chicago used to be under Mayor Daly
[11:01] Baeric Constantine: multiple alts can distort voting
[11:01] Geri Kuhn: so Lexis, having dues payable until July 15?
[11:01] Sam4 Courtois: "Used to be?"
[11:01] jamiebryce Infinity: hm. we'd need to enable dead avatar voting, Lexis
[11:01] Lexis Looming: there is no way to prohibit alts
[11:02] Sam4 Courtois: Voter early and often.
[11:02] TelLagu Swords: ah, Chicago-style voting!
[11:02] Agenda FarometAgenda Faromet is all for one prim, one vote. *looks at her arc*
[11:02] jamiebryce Infinity: sure there is, lexis - but a talk for another time
[11:02] Cat Galileo: parenthetical, the self-nomination threads are up at: http://slbarassn.ning.com/forum/categories/elections-201011/listForCategory
[11:02] Geri Kuhn: Thanks Cat!
[11:03] Baeric Constantine: lol agenda
[11:03] Baeric Constantine: brb
[11:03] Geri Kuhn: While you are creating foums, how about a discussion about the date for elections for 2011?
[11:03] jamiebryce Infinity: hm. You could start the Big Hair Party.
[11:03] Geri Kuhn: I mean a forum to discuss that.
[11:04] Geri Kuhn: Need to scroll back to see where we are on the dues discussion.
[11:04] Lexis Looming: I will send a general Notice they are due by July 1
[11:05] Agenda Faromet: I think jamiebryce had offered to pay everybody's dues for them, and we had all agreed.
[11:05] Sam4 Courtois: Due by the end of July - 45 days notice before being kicked out
[11:05] Geri Kuhn: Okay, thanks Lexis.
[11:05] Geri Kuhn: We would still welcome ideas for speakers.
[11:06] Geri Kuhn: Please see Cat if you wish to speak or know of someone.,
[11:06] Geri Kuhn: Does anyone have any other business to bring up?
[11:06] Geri Kuhn: If not, is there a motion to adjourn?
[11:06] Sam4 Courtois: Question?
[11:06] Geri Kuhn: Sure
[11:06] Soro Dagostino: so move.
[11:06] TelLagu Swords: seconded
[11:07] Geri Kuhn: One sec for the question
[11:07] Sam4 Courtois: When will the minutes of this meeting be available on line?
[11:07] jamiebryce Infinityjamiebryce Infinity sighs, QUick, adjounr before Agenda gets her hands on my wallet
[11:07] Agenda FarometAgenda Faromet looks innocent.
[11:07] Geri Kuhn: I think Cat tries to do that quickly.
[11:08] Sam4 Courtois: Thanks
[11:08] Cat Galileo: http://slbarassn.ning.com/forum/topics/proposed-change-of-election
[11:08] Geri Kuhn: Thanks for the forum Cat
[11:08] Geri Kuhn: Okay, all in favor of the motion to adjourn?
[11:08] Sam4 Courtois: Aye
[11:08] TelLagu Swords: Yup.
[11:08] Cat Galileo: I do try to do that quickly. I think i missed last month tho. I've been flaky lately
[11:08] Cat Galileo: aye
[11:09] Geri Kuhn: aye
[11:09] Lexis Looming: aye.....Good meeting Geri</P>
