July 17, 2010
[10:13] Geri Kuhn: Good morning everyone.
I would like to remind you all that a transcript is being made of this meeting and will be posted to our website.
[10:13] Geri Kuhn: The only agenda item we have today is hearing from our candidates for board positions.
Before we begin with hearing from the candidates, I would like to let you know that we will be changing our building.
[10:13] Geri Kuhn: Agenda Faromet has kindly designed a new building that uses less prims. We are going to replace this building with hers. We will then have more prims to use for other things like furniture. I think by the time of our next meeting, we will have it in place.
[10:14] Soro Dagostino: What about the toxic rain?
[10:14] Geri Kuhn: The next item of business is to hear from our candidates.
[10:14] Geri Kuhn: Yes, the toxic rain is a problem.
[10:14] Geri Kuhn: I have to follow up with Ben to see if he heard back about his complaint.
[10:14] Geri Kuhn: Sam also suggessted raising the building
[10:15] Geri Kuhn: up
[10:15] Rose Springvale: individuals can turn off partical rendering if it bother sthem
[10:15] Geri Kuhn: So we may pursue both options.
[10:15] Geri Kuhn: All board positions are actually uncontested so all of the candidates running will be automatically elected.
[10:15] jamiebryce Infinity: Geri, is there a URL for the part of the new sebwite where candidates are listed?
[10:15] jamiebryce Infinity: *website
[10:16] jamiebryce Infinity: heh
[10:16] Rose Springvale: ctrl d, advarnced, rendering, types, particles (uncheck)
[10:16] Geri Kuhn: However, it will be nice to hear from each of them to see what their goals/ideas are for next year.
[10:16] Geri Kuhn: Sam, would you like to start first?
[10:16] Sam4 Courtois: Sure
[10:16] jamiebryce Infinity: /me chuckles
[10:17] Sam4 Courtois: My name is Sam4 Courtois
[10:17] Sam4 Courtois: my real life nom de plume is JP Tangen
[10:17] Sam4 Courtois: I practice mining law in Alaska
[10:18] Sam4 Courtois: I have been doing that since 1975.
[10:18] Sam4 Courtois: If anyone care, I ahve a website with a CV at www.jptangen.com
[10:19] Sam4 Courtois: as you can see, I have no technical background and I do not practice in the area of IP
[10:20] Sam4 Courtois: However, I have had a fascination with the application of computers and the law dating back to when I was in law school in the late 1960's
[10:21] Sam4 Courtois: I believe that virtual worlds are a giant step forward toward the natural future in the are of legal tools
[10:21] Sam4 Courtois: Where I live, many of the major communities are not on the road system
[10:22] Sam4 Courtois: Juneau, the State capital, and Nome, for instance are hundreds of miles away, and one cannoen drive to either place
[10:22] Sam4 Courtois: yet the people of Nome deserve to be repreented in person in the capital
[10:22] Rose Springvale: (excuses herself, will read the rest on the forums. Thanks to all of you for running!)
[10:22] Sam4 Courtois: Virtual reality could facilitate that
[10:23] Sam4 Courtois: I think taht example could be replicated in thousands of ways
[10:23] Sam4 Courtois: For me the SLBA is a way to introduce virtual reality to lawyers, as a first step to broad acceptance
[10:24] Sam4 Courtois: I believe we can recruit lawyers to the Association
[10:24] Sam4 Courtois: I believe we can demonstrate the worth of SL
[10:24] Sam4 Courtois: I believe the things that have happened already are wonderful examples
[10:24] Sam4 Courtois: for isntance the fantastic CLE programs taht eh Association ahs sponsored are excellent examples of the uses of the tool
[10:25] jamiebryce Infinity smiles, looks around. Eight minute mark. Geri's crashed, so as a non-returning board member, I think I can claim to be a substitute moderator. Maybe 2 more minutes. Sami?
[10:25] jamiebryce Infinity: Sam4, sorry
[10:25] Sam4 Courtois: I would like to have a role in expanding the acceptance of this tool to our legal brethern and sistern
[10:25] Sam4 Courtois: Thanks for lsitening
[10:26] Legal Writer: Thanks for sharing, Sam.
[10:26] jamiebryce Infinity: Thank you! I did also see Juris here, though she's gone again, and Daniel our President candidate is present.
[10:26] Sam4 Courtois: sorry I cannot type
[10:26] jamiebryce Infinity squints
[10:26] jamiebryce Infinity: any otehr candidates?
[10:26] Yoss Kamachi: i'm here
[10:26] DanielPerry Laa: I am DanielPerry Laa. I will be very brief.
[10:26] jamiebryce Infinity: Probably makes sense to ask for a few words from Daniel next?
[10:26] jamiebryce Infinity: Then Yoss, good.
[10:26] jamiebryce Infinity: (and Juris is back). Daniel?
[10:26] DanielPerry Laa: My RL name is Daniel Perry. I practice Internet Law in Orlando, Florida. I have been active in many tech circles since 1983.
[10:27] DanielPerry Laa: I am General Counsel to identity Commons, Inc., - a digital identity not-for-profit. I support SLBA and all of your efforts to broaden SLBA's appeal.
[10:27] DanielPerry Laa: More specifically, I would like to increase CLE or VCLE in the coming years. I also want to build more SL friendly venues for lawyers.
[10:28] DanielPerry Laa: Thanks, and I look forward to woirking with all of you
[10:28] Geri Kuhn: I am sorry, I got booted off'
[10:28] jamiebryce Infinity: See your IM, Geri :)
[10:28] Geri Kuhn: Thanks
[10:29] Juris Amat: claps and apologizes for the coming and going (bad connection)
[10:29] Geri Kuhn: Yeah really
[10:29] Geri Kuhn: Juris, have you spoken yet?
[10:29] jamiebryce Infinity: Were we read to hear from Juris, now, as she is logged back in and has some connectivty issues?
[10:29] jamiebryce Infinity: (and Yoss also is in queue)
[10:30] Juris Amat: Hi Jamie, hello everyone! Long time no see ;) and it is good to see you all.
[10:31] Geri Kuhn: Juris, are you still here?
[10:31] Juris Amat: I'll also try to keep this brief; I would really make it a priority to outreach to other groups in world. It is important to know what is happening in terms of issues being dealt with by various groups in world that may have some legal impact
[10:31] Geri Kuhn: /sorry
[10:31] Juris Amat: still here...thank goodness ;) lol
[10:31] Juris Amat: yikes
[10:32] Juris Amat: but yes I feel that there is so much happening that we may not be aware of simply because of our lack of contact
[10:33] Juris Amat: I would work on that as well as getting us out and involved in more activites
[10:33] Juris Amat: thats it ; thanks everyone!
[10:33] Geri Kuhn: Thanks Juris
[10:33] Geri Kuhn: Okay, Yoss.
[10:33] Geri Kuhn: You are next
[10:34] Yoss Kamachi: Hi everybody
[10:34] Yoss Kamachi: In RL my name is Tim Faith, and I am a Maryland attorney
[10:34] Yoss Kamachi: Before I became an attorney I worked in IT for about 10 years
[10:34] Yoss Kamachi: And I also have operated a tech LLC, which has hosted some web sites and sone some tech related stuff
[10:34] Yoss Kamachi: I think I can be of help with our web presence
[10:35] jamiebryce Infinity: oo, excellent
[10:35] Yoss Kamachi: I agree with Sam that SL is a beach head for more virtual reality
[10:35] Yoss Kamachi: and that we should engage our colleagues
[10:35] Yoss Kamachi: to join us and participate
[10:35] Yoss Kamachi: I think the web site can be a way to help obtain that goal
[10:35] Yoss Kamachi: I look forward to being of help
[10:36] Yoss Kamachi: and also to finally finding some furniture for our place here
[10:36] Geri Kuhn: :)
[10:36] Yoss Kamachi: I yield the floor
[10:36] Geri Kuhn: Thank you Yoss
[10:36] Geri Kuhn: There are two other individuals running for board positions.
[10:36] Geri Kuhn: Agenda Faroment
[10:37] Geri Kuhn: She will be helping us with our building
[10:37] Geri Kuhn: I am not sure why she isn't here today but I know she is committed.
[10:37] Geri Kuhn: And the other is Lexis who is already VP finance and is running for that position again.
[10:37] jamiebryce Infinity: And if I may, here's that website URL: http://slbarassn.ning.com/forum/categories/elections-201011/listForCategory
[10:38] Geri Kuhn: Thanks Jamie :)
[10:38] Legal Writer: Agenda has a strong interest in SL.
[10:38] Geri Kuhn: Definitely
[10:38] Juris Amat: I probably should mention that I'm also an attorney (MA) and recently UK qualified solicitor yay!! but you guys please feel free to visit the VIPO website www.vipo-online.org for more info about my activities in world.
[10:38] Juris Amat: sorry about that break...
[10:38] Juris Amat: in
[10:38] Legal Writer: Congrats, Juris!
[10:38] Geri Kuhn: Wow, that is great Juris.
[10:38] Geri Kuhn: Congratulations
[10:39] Yoss Kamachi: cool
[10:39] Sam4 Courtois: aWESOME!
[10:39] Juris Amat: THANKS!!!
[10:39] Juris Amat: woohoo
[10:39] Geri Kuhn: Lexis could not be here today; he is on vacation apparently on a canoe somewhere fishing
[10:39] Geri Kuhn: He has done a terrific job
[10:39] jamiebryce Infinity: sounded darn happy about the canoe, too :D
[10:39] Geri Kuhn: and it will be great to have him continue
[10:39] Geri Kuhn: He sure did
[10:40] jamiebryce Infinity: Geri, when this is done, let mw know about time for general announcements?
[10:40] Geri Kuhn: I would like to thank the candidates who are riunning and welcome them to the board
[10:41] Geri Kuhn: Sure Jamie
[10:41] Sam4 Courtois: Thank you
[10:41] DanielPerry Laa: Thank you all and you Geri for coordinating this.
[10:41] Juris Amat: Thanks Geri.
[10:41] Geri Kuhn: I would very much like to thank the current board for their work over the past year.
[10:41] Sam4 Courtois: Absolutely
[10:41] Geri Kuhn: I hope you all remain active with the SL Bar and continue to particiapte.
[10:42] Geri Kuhn: All right Jamie, I think we are ready for general annoucnements.
[10:42] jamiebryce Infinity: ty
[10:42] jamiebryce Infinity: three things.
[10:42] jamiebryce Infinity: well, first of all, let me selfishly add my thanks to Geri's to those running. I was pleased to serve on the Board, and will be happy to continue to stay involved.
[10:43] jamiebryce Infinity: Second, a social activities comment: One of Agenda's informal actions tihs past year had been to host a few "open-bar" social meetings for SLBA. I thought they were great, and she plans to continue them.
[10:43] jamiebryce Infinity: So I wanted to mention that, as she;s not here todya. Watch the SLBA group for announcements
[10:43] jamiebryce Infinity: finally
[10:43] jamiebryce Infinity: next meetign we will certainly ask for a motion of thanks to our departing officers Geri and Kate
[10:43] jamiebryce Infinity: but let me ask one question before that
[10:44] Geri Kuhn: I'm not leaving yet...
[10:44] Geri Kuhn: My term ends in January
[10:44] Geri Kuhn: :)
[10:44] jamiebryce Infinity: losing Cat from the Board, have we a plan for CLE continuation?
[10:44] Geri Kuhn: Well I spoke to her a few months ago and she said she would continue with the CLE stuff
[10:44] Geri Kuhn: Let me ask her that again, though, to see if that is still true.
[10:45] jamiebryce Infinity: ok :) so we elect in July, and no one turns over until December? Er, OK, am I still on the hook for a few more board meetings?
[10:45] Juris Amat: uh oh...wanted to voluteer to do a cle on machinima copyrights, trademarks and avatars around the end of summer.
[10:45] Geri Kuhn: No, just the president
[10:45] jamiebryce Infinity: is Kate still comm person, etc. until then?
[10:45] Geri Kuhn: The idea was to provide some overlap
[10:45] Geri Kuhn: The board is all new ,i.e., you are off the hook
[10:46] Geri Kuhn: except for the president
[10:46] jamiebryce Infinity: Right, then, thx for the clarification. Stil lhave to work the CLE angle though, thanks
[10:46] Sam4 Courtois: No way!
[10:46] Geri Kuhn: Daniel will be president elect for a few months
[10:46] jamiebryce Infinity: board turnover = now, pres = january, got it
[10:46] jamiebryce Infinity: /me grins broadly
[10:46] Geri Kuhn: Right
[10:46] Legal Writer: Other officers also turn over now.
[10:46] Geri Kuhn: yes
[10:46] Sam4 Courtois: Just because Jamie is off the board that does not mean he is ioff the hok
[10:46] Geri Kuhn: hehehe
[10:46] jamiebryce Infinity: /me smiles
[10:47] jamiebryce Infinity: you know where to find me
[10:47] Sam4 Courtois: hook*
[10:47] Geri Kuhn: Definitely we will need to do somehthing about CLE if Cat is no longer interested.
[10:47] Geri Kuhn: I will find out and report back.
[10:47] DanielPerry Laa: [have to step away for a minute]
[10:47] Geri Kuhn: And great to hear Juris that you would like to speak.
[10:48] Juris Amat: yes way!! well even if its not for credit I'll offer to put on the lecture anyway...say towards the end of September
[10:48] Geri Kuhn: Are there any other announcements/new business?
[10:48] jamiebryce Infinity: done here :)
[10:48] Sam4 Courtois: Clearly one of our greatest contributions is the CLE programs
[10:48] Juris Amat: cool thanks Geri.
[10:48] Geri Kuhn: Okay, is there a motion to adjourn?
[10:49] Legal Writer: I would like to add something
[10:49] Geri Kuhn: Sure, Legal.
[10:49] Legal Writer: I think one of the challenges we have as an association is to add to the critical mass of the group.
[10:49] Legal Writer: In other words, we need more people.
[10:49] Juris Amat: mos def
[10:49] Geri Kuhn: Yes
[10:49] Legal Writer: I hope all of us can think of ways to increase membership.
[10:50] Legal Writer: With the bad news about Linden Research, layoffs, etc., it hasn't been a good year for SL
[10:50] Sam4 Courtois: There certainly are tons of things we can do
[10:50] Legal Writer: We may be hurt by a general trend of the shine coming off of SL.
[10:50] Legal Writer: I think as an industry, we are in the "Trough of Disillusionment" portion of the Gartner Curve.
[10:50] Sam4 Courtois: I believe there are lawyers on line that ahve not found their way ehre
[10:50] Legal Writer: Not sure if everyone knows what I am talking about.
[10:51] jamiebryce Infinity: /me smiles. I admit I wonder whether we want instead to be the Virtual Worlds Bar Assn
[10:51] Juris Amat: Not really but the disillusionment references is pretty clear
[10:51] Legal Writer: But what it means is that the initial wave of euphoria about SL and virtual worlds has worn off, and the hard work must begin to build an industry
[10:51] jamiebryce Infinity: Gartner didn't invent the concept of fads :D they just try to rename and copyright it
[10:51] Juris Amat: ah ha
[10:52] Legal Writer: Eventually, the industry will become huge, and will eclipse the infant state of the industry back when SL was the hottest thing around.
[10:52] DanielPerry Laa: [I'm back]
[10:52] jamiebryce Infinity: It's an american thing, Juris :D we try to patent EVERYTHING
[10:52] jamiebryce Infinity: :P
[10:52] Legal Writer: Bit between now and then, we have some work to do to sustain momentum to keep us going.
[10:52] Legal Writer: I recommend that we find one person, someone, who will, as a role in this association, agree to coordinate all membership efforts.
[10:53] Legal Writer: That one person can then make sure the ball is moving forward, and things are happening.
[10:53] Sam4 Courtois: What membership initiatives are outstanding?
[10:53] Juris Amat: raises her hand to volunteer
[10:53] Yoss Kamachi: we may also want to market our CLE activities through other RL bar associations
[10:53] Juris Amat: in the process of doing the exact same thing for VIPO
[10:53] Geri Kuhn: Thanks Juris :)
[10:53] Sam4 Courtois: That is a great idea
[10:53] DanielPerry Laa: Agree, Yoss!
[10:53] Geri Kuhn: That was quick
[10:53] Legal Writer: Also, if people have projects to do, like creating committees to write publications and put on program, people will become drawn in and more active.
[10:54] Geri Kuhn: Hi Cat, welcome
[10:54] Legal Writer: We need infrastructure, e.g., making our sections active.
[10:54] Juris Amat: great ideas.
[10:54] Sam4 Courtois: Hello CAt!
[10:54] DanielPerry Laa: membership needs more than one person to coordinate
[10:54] Legal Writer: I think that will help our level of participation and "stickiness."
[10:54] Cat Galileo: Hi. Sorry I'm so late, I just woke up.
[10:54] Juris Amat: Hi Cat!!
[10:54] Juris Amat: lol
[10:54] Legal Writer: Hey, Cat.
[10:54] Cat Galileo: had a rough day yesterday
[10:54] Cat Galileo: :-)
[10:54] Juris Amat: good to see you!
[10:54] Soro Dagostino: Morning Cat.
[10:55] Legal Writer: Anyway, these are some thoughts about getting the association more active and more members.
[10:55] DanielPerry Laa: Membership should be Association-wide major initiative
[10:55] Geri Kuhn: Thank you Legal.
[10:55] Sam4 Courtois: Agreed.
[10:55] Geri Kuhn: Perhaps we should place this idea on the agenda for the next meeting and also brainstorm a bit during our meeting?
[10:56] DanielPerry Laa: Agreed
[10:56] Juris Amat: true Daniel but having one person whose focus is that is a good idea.
[10:56] Yoss Kamachi: I agree with that
[10:56] Yoss Kamachi: (putting this on the next meeting agenda)
[10:56] Juris Amat: btw does everyone see the blood dripping from the ceiling or is that just me?
[10:56] Sam4 Courtois: Just you!
[10:56] DanielPerry Laa: Juris, maybe a pivot person or perosns would help
[10:56] Geri Kuhn: just you, hehehe
[10:56] jamiebryce Infinity: heh heh old newa juris
[10:56] Juris Amat: yikes!!!
[10:56] Geri Kuhn: yes it is blood
[10:56] Yoss Kamachi: i thought you brought the blood juris
[10:56] jamiebryce Infinity: vampires next door, we sent in a complaint
[10:56] jamiebryce Infinity: /me chuckles
[10:56] Geri Kuhn: Ben has filed a complaint with Linden
[10:57] Juris Amat: geeezzz
[10:57] Geri Kuhn: I need to ask him what happened with it
[10:57] Legal Writer: How about a nuisance suit?
[10:57] jamiebryce Infinity: well it;s a nice demo of the extreme limits to "policing" and property rights in SL
[10:57] DanielPerry Laa: Trespass?
[10:57] Juris Amat: vampire nuisances..only in SL lol!!
[10:57] jamiebryce Infinity: heh
[10:57] Yoss Kamachi: where is the SL zoning board when you need it?
[10:57] DanielPerry Laa: least its not staining the carpet
[10:57] jamiebryce Infinity: actually they have Zoning Ninjss
[10:57] jamiebryce Infinity: *ninjas
[10:58] Cat Galileo: i forgot my umbrella
[10:58] Yoss Kamachi: lol
[10:58] Sam4 Courtois: I think it qualifies as public interest litigation
[10:58] Geri Kuhn: We also may raise our new building higher so as to avoid the blood
[10:58] Geri Kuhn: Okay, I am going to give Cat the floor to talk about CLE
[10:59] Geri Kuhn: Since she is here :)
[10:59] Cat Galileo: hi folks.
[10:59] DanielPerry Laa: Welcome, Cat!
[10:59] Cat Galileo: first of all i apologize for being late, I'm excited about our new board and was hoping to hear the speeches :
[10:59] Cat Galileo: :_
[10:59] Cat Galileo: :-)
[10:59] Cat Galileo: /e sighs
[10:59] Soro Dagostino: Sorry all, RL calls.
[11:00] Cat Galileo: I am currently certified to offer CLE credit in California, but unfortunately I haven't had time to organize stuff this year
[11:00] Cat Galileo: however, I' am delighted to work with other folks in providing the certification
[11:00] Juris Amat: great!
[11:00] Cat Galileo: and help with logistics based on my experiences
[11:01] Cat Galileo: I guess that's all ã‹¡
[11:01] jamiebryce Infinity: ok let me ask a selifhs piggy question :D
[11:01] Cat Galileo: questions welcome
[11:01] DanielPerry Laa: Thanks for your continued efforts, Cat!
[11:01] jamiebryce Infinity: if others line up the talent, woudl you still be willing to serce as the certifier?
[11:01] Cat Galileo: yes
[11:01] Cat Galileo: as long as I can review it for compliance first
[11:01] Cat Galileo: of course. but i'm sure they would be fine
[11:02] Legal Writer: No yoga for avatars to get CLE credit?
[11:02] Cat Galileo: sometimes getting the written materials ahead of time to review is.. problematic
[11:02] Geri Kuhn: hehehee
[11:02] jamiebryce Infinity: :) too cool. thanks, would save a lot of gyrations for SLBA
[11:02] Juris Amat: haha
[11:02] Legal Writer: I got an ad for a CLE seiminar in Berkeley in which the instruction was about yoga.
[11:03] Cat Galileo: i think i got that too!
[11:03] Geri Kuhn: Yeah, there is a meditation one too, maybe the same one
[11:03] Cat Galileo: life balaance or something
[11:03] Juris Amat: berkeley wow!! gotta get over there.
[11:03] Geri Kuhn: And Cat, I don't think you were here when Juris volunteered to speak - sometime in September
[11:03] Legal Writer: Definitely avoiding substance abuse if you're too busy with yoga.
[11:04] Geri Kuhn: Well speaking of substance abuse, I can ask Carol if she would be willing to speak on that
[11:04] Juris Amat: Thats right I volunteer to present on machinima copyrights and avatar trademarks in late summer
[11:04] Juris Amat: Ill be in touch about that
[11:04] Geri Kuhn: Not sure if folks are interested in substance abuse :)
[11:04] Cat Galileo: that sounds like a great topic
[11:05] Cat Galileo: digital drugs!
[11:05] Juris Amat: who should I be in otuch with? I already have materials...its based on an article thats already written
[11:05] Geri Kuhn: Not as good of a topic as Juris"
[11:05] Juris Amat: Thanks Geri!!!
[11:05] Cat Galileo: Kids around the country are getting high on the internet, thanks to MP3s that induce a state of ecstasy. //www.wired.com/threatlevel/2010/07/digital-drugs/#ixzz0txq7aYaO
[11:05] Geri Kuhn: I think you should be in touch with Cat, as to the certification
[11:05] Juris Amat: what???!!!
[11:06] Geri Kuhn: and as to the schedule, let us both know
[11:06] jamiebryce Infinity: /me smiles - virtual worlds addicition - bet you could get it accredited
[11:06] Cat Galileo: pretty sure it's bogus
[11:06] Geri Kuhn: I heard about it on NPR yesterday, Cat.
[11:06] jamiebryce Infinity: a general unit on addictive behaviors and practice degradation - then draw a connection
[11:06] Cat Galileo: me too
[11:06] Juris Amat: is that the devils gate thing?
[11:06] jamiebryce Infinity: :D LOTS of research on e-games & addicition
[11:06] Geri Kuhn: Okay, any other business?
[11:07] Sam4 Courtois: Move we adjourn.
[11:07] Geri Kuhn: Anyone second?
[11:07] Yoss Kamachi: second

[11:07] DanielPerry Laa: Thanks, all! Bye!
[11:07] Yoss Kamachi: later
[11:07] Sam4 Courtois: bye all
[11:07] Legal Writer: Thanks, all.
[11:07] jamiebryce Infinity: Geri do we need to watch for some kinda Official Vote action?
[11:08] Geri Kuhn: Well we don't really need to vote
[11:08] Cat Galileo: Yoss, i'm happy to hear you are interested in VP Comm, I will be delighted to provide you any help i can in transition
[11:08] jamiebryce Infinity: ok, motion to approve by acclaimination ror something?
[11:08] Geri Kuhn: None of the positions were contested
[11:08] jamiebryce Infinity: it;s a corporate board geri
[11:08] Legal Writer: Oooh. Should we have something in teh record to confirm a voite?
[11:08] jamiebryce Infinity: L:) need SOMETHING
[11:08] Geri Kuhn: Ugh
[11:08] Geri Kuhn: okay
